THE DUMMY MEETS MANUELA MANES

#DEFINE COLOURED SOUL

Conveying emotions through colours, catching a glimpse of a little pretty fishing harbour at dusk and by means of images make a story out of it, a story that is abstract, evocative and quaint at the same time. Gazing admiringly at the sea and get the most warm and vivid, almost surreal, tones of blue. Talking by means of one own canvases and art about the state of desperation of migrants who cross the Mediterranean Sea in search of new hope, dreams,  joy, light and life too. Talking about people in search of safety and freedom, in search of many things that often shipwreck and drown with them during these exhausting voyages. Talking about different people who in these voyages narrate their stories in the school of hard knocks. They all have one thing in common that is they all set off on a long journey, in the broadest sense of the term, across the Mediterranean Sea. These people set off for places where often there is no way back or where they are forced to burn their bridges. I came across Manuela Manes’s works on the occasion of Pelagos exhibition that took place in Milan in 2012 at the Deodato Art Gallery. Her works of art aroused in me strong feelings and intense emotions. Her project was made up of twenty small paintings which portrayed twenty colourful and lively fishes that were associated with the names of twenty different migrants. I was extremely fascinated by the vibrant colours that she used in abundance to represent these people and as a result their high hopes and dreams for the future. Despite their diversities, all these people share a common destiny, that of the migrant and as a consequence they all get entangled in a net of dangers and adversities.

By recounting these stories through a canvas, the artist displays feelings and emotions by means of colours and brush strokes. This way of expressing herself gave birth to another art collection entitled Scomposizioni Sensoriali (Sensorial Scompositions). These works of art are part of the largest as much as most ambitious Pelagos’s project and are intended to show migrants’ feelings and emotions such as freedom, warmth, memory, and so on, that in the end of the day are common to all human beings. In these works of art, colours along with different materials make the sensoriality both visible and palpable at the same time.

However, Manuela’s art like emotions, is mobile not fixed and therefore is a process not a thing, a becoming not a being. This means that it is constantly constructed in the passing of time and the passage of meaning, it’s a sort of process of perpetual re-birth. Manuela adores pushing the envelope, experimenting as much as changing the arstistic perspective. She loves living her life, discovering new worlds, setting off on new journeys and having new feelings. She was thrilled to bits to express all these things through the art collection Islands (Isole). Islands is an art project made up of six works dedicated to the Mediterranean Sea islands. Secluded places became perfect spots for taking good shots. Thus, pictures like the old harbour of Pantelleria for instance, turned into suggestion as well as into mesmerizing and mystic images, in which the colour as much as the experimentation of sands and varnishes made dreams come true.

As though she wanted to dive into the abyss, explore it and experience the unknown firsthand, Manuela focused on one detail of the islands and out of them she made six small paintings. She did it as if she wanted to examine emotions one by one in depth, to look at them closely, to analyse them in detail. A small portion in each of the six small painting, seems to portray the explosion of a vibrant colour which in turn gives birth to the mesmerizing and mystic Mediterranean Suggestions (Suggestioni Mediterranee).

Talking about her artistic and career path, Manuela tells me that she is working on another project,  where once again experimentation plays a pivotal role. That is why she goes for the removal of colour that aims at getting to a lowest common denominator from an artistic point of view. The art collection Itineraries (Itinerari) on which Manuela is still working on, portrays a journey in which the artist does her utmost to involve the onlooker in the work of art which was created through a new pictorial technique. Thus, Manuela made use of materials such as paper, corrugated cardboard, sands, tapes, wood, design elements and pieces of newspaper. Her work of art as usual, aims at instilling harmony in the viewer.

Always driven by her love for the sea and for what, broadly speaking, the sea represents, Manuela is also one of the co-founders of the Mediterranean Project (Progetto Mediterranea www.progettomediterranea.com). This project revolves around a five year sailing voyage across the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea and the northern Red Sea. It is not only nautical but also cultural, scientific and social at the same time. It will include meetings and talks among people who live near or by the Mediterranean Sea, so that to think about its future and make any effort to preserve it as best as one can. In this respect, who would be able to do that better than the people who along the Mediterranean Sea shores have invented the future? If we thought of the Mediterranean Sea as a border we would lose all its richness, its wisdom, its significance and its real meaning, we would deprive ourselves of its essence and magnificence at the same time. Borders and lines are like barriers, they divide, and generate distance among populations. Nevertheless, human beings and civilizations reach their peak not through the maintenance of their cultural purity, rather through interrelation and exchange with other populations. In so doing they go through a process of cultural contamination which leads to their hybridisation.

“There is nothing left for me to do but wish you Manuela bon voyage, and best of luck with this voyage and with those for the years to come”.
