GREGORIO LEON, LATERAL THINKER

This short yet profound conversation is a glimpse into the subtlety with which Gregorio León has transformed every commitment with the world of ideas into a joust for the investigation on space, time and form. By combining perspectives, techniques and materials he offers a passionate reflection on human condition to tell an old story that has never been more current. A story called Life.

Francesca Interlenghi: Pensatore fuori dagli schemi. Nato a Basilea, in Svizzera. Studi di economia, storia dell’arte, organizzazioni internazionali all’università di Basilea. Pensi, parli, sogni in tedesco, inglese, francese, italiano e spagnolo … Chi è Gregorio Leon?

Gregorio León: Spagnolo, nato a Basilea (Svizzera) e, come hai detto, penso, parlo e sogno in tedesco, inglese, francese, italiano e spagnolo.

Francesca Interlenghi: Lateral thinker. Born in Basle. Economics, history of art, international organizations at the university of Basel. Thinking, speaking, dreaming in German, English, French, Italian, and Spanish…Who is Gregorio Leon?

Gregorio Leon: Spanish, born in Basle (Switzerland) and, as stated, thinking, speaking and dreaming in German, English, French, Italian and Spanish. I am a very curious person human being. What is taken place behind the scene, what’s going on in all aspects. Eg. cancer is “It is what it is” but not for all other things, matters or what ever it is. Regarding business and studies, I sometimes went to the university. History of Art, law, economics and a lotta more things, enjoying the party’s. Project management in IT as communication coordinator was main part in business.

A = approccio

R = riproduzione della propria percezione

T = a-temporale

Francesca Interlenghi: What role plays art in your life and work?

Gregorio: Art is what it keeps me alive and worth to be alive. This sounds extremely tough but this is the way my brain keeps going on.

Another point of view is:

A = approach

R = reproduction of your perception

T = timeless

Francesca: Come sei arrivato alla fotografia? E che formazione hai avuto?

Gregorio: Nessuna formazione.

Francesca: How did you come to photography? And what training did you have?

Gregorio: No training. Picked up a camera and I shot. Be aware, from my point of view, that photography is the copy right of your creativity/perception of your eyes (author’s note, quote by @grrrrek). If you understand, technically speaking, by heart your camera then you are a technician. I do not understand  my camera … maybe a little bit … therefore art? Who knows.

Solo sperimentazione. Nessun indizio. Prova e tira fuori qualcosa.

Francesca: How would you describe your approach and attitudes? Can you tell me more about your process of working?

Gregorio: My process of working has no structure. I have no rules. Rules kill me. Just experimentation. I have no clue. Try and stick it out.

Francesca: In this process/no process, a mix of stories starts to unfold – private or public, real or fictional. Tales and characters intersect and unexpected connection emerge.

Gregorio: I mix photography with painting and vice versa. That means: shoot, print, paint, shoot, print, digital modifications in the abstract area. And the whole process also vice versa. No manual, no guide. Risky, but at the end of the day … fuck it, I feel fine or maybe not, who knows. Tales, characters, unexpected cross my life, no rules, no guides and this runs through your veins and I hope my brains feels approved.

Alcuni giorni va bene, altri giorni no. Un impatto forte. Ma c’è ancora la creatività, giusto?

Francesca: Your life has been affected by a traumatic experience such as cancer. How has this event influenced your perspective on your life and consequently on your art?

Gregorio: I started again with art in 2017, after 33 years (funny figure, right?), just before getting the diagnosis of cancer. Nowadays I say: thank you motherfucking cancer but I will include you into my art. This it what happened in my first works after the heavy therapy (chemo and radio on the same time). Chemo and Radiology completely changed my life, my brain and unfortunately my daily living. Some days life works, some times days not. Heavy impact. But there is still creativity, right?

Francesca: Your first exhibition took place in September 2018. It was a retrospective of the experience of chemo and radiology, breath and relativization. How did you develop the concept and how was the show structured?

Gregorio: No concept. I looked at my works and said to myself: this one, this one, this one, this one, will be printed and will be on the exhibition.

Francesca: Do you have any dream projects you haven’t been able to realize?

Gregorio: Become a pilot. Why? Horrible eye accident, at the age of 13.
