#DEFINE CONTEMPORARY ART

Materico e sperimentatore, innovatore e versatile, acuto indagatore della realtà Mauro Pallotta la sa restituire, attraverso le sue opere, in forma di profonda riflessione sul tempo presente. Un’arte connotata da una esplicita cifra stilistica, da un tratto così peculiare che il Wall Street Journal ne ha voluto parlare come di un trapasso dalla pittura alla scultura. E’ in effetti scultorea la sua mano, lo dice lui stesso che, pur essendo il disegno il suo linguaggio primario, se ha qualcosa di malleabile in mano cerca sempre di scolpirlo, quasi fosse più forte di lui. Nato e cresciuto a Roma, intensamente ancorato per storia di vita all’anima di una città che dice di sentire perfino nelle tasche, Mauro inizia il suo percorso artistico dopo aver frequentato la sezione di pittura dell’Accademia delle Belle Arti. Da subito l’urgenza di esplorare e creare che lo contraddistinguono trova appagamento nell’utilizzo di materiali diversi, non così avvezzi al linguaggio dell’arte come le carte da gioco, il legno, i tappi di sughero delle bottiglie di vino. “Riciclavo materiali che altrimenti sarebbero stati buttati. Le carte da gioco in particolare esercitavano su di me una forte attrattiva per il loro significato simbolico: la scommessa, il coperto, lo scoperto, quindi il visibile e il segreto. Un’ottima texture per me, sotto diversi punti di vista”. 

La sua sperimentazione artistica prende forma strutturata contestualmente al Giubileo del 2000, in un incubatore cittadino pieno di fermento e romanità si potrebbe dire, per cui anche i suoi primi lavori narrano di storie urbane, parlano dei luoghi e dei personaggi che animano Roma. Ma l’urgenza di inventare, di scoprire una nuova modalità pittorica, lo porta a misurasi nel giro di breve con la lana d’acciaio, tra tutti i materiali quello probabilmente meno consono alla pratica artistica. Ma è l’intuizione che gli spalanca tutte le porte. “Dentro di me, anche nei momenti più difficili, avevo la certezza che l’arte sarebbe stata la mia strada. Quando ho scoperto la lana d’acciaio e lo spray sulla lana d’acciaio, e ho realizzato che i due materiali si sposavano perfettamente, ne ho avuto la consapevolezza. Quella è diventata la mia pratica assodata. Una tecnica molto complicata che però con il tempo sono riuscito ad affinare.” La lana d’acciaio utilizzata come supporto per le sue figurazioni rivela tutta l’eclettica personalità di Mauro, che riesce a modellare soggetti diversi e coglierli nelle loro espressioni più significative.

Eppure la sua ricerca non si accontenta della perfezione raggiunta lavorando questo inusuale materiale, non si appaga dello stile impeccabile che caratterizza i suoi bellissimi volti. Con la consapevolezza di chi domina la tecnica e può decidere di virare nella direzione di opere stilisticamente più grezze, Mauro prova l’esperienza di introdurre la sua arte alla strada, generando una sorta di alter-ego: MauPal. Emerge netto il bisogno di portare il proprio temperamento e il proprio pensiero fuori dai luoghi istituzionali, per la strada appunto. Perché emerge il bisogno di dire e di dire dove ha più risonanza, dove produce un’eco maggiore. “La prima sperimentazione avviene nel 2012, nel pieno della crisi economica, con un’opera raffigurante dei topolini che inseguono un gatto, a significare la ribellione del più debole contro il più forte. L’anno successivo, nel 2013, rappresento un pesciolino che insegue uno squalo dicendogli: la vita è un mozzico.” I temi sono quelli del potere, della crisi, la questione economica e quella politica. E il suo essere sincero, leale e profondo, sia come artista che come uomo, gli impone di andare direttamente al dunque, di colpire chi detiene il potere e farlo ostaggio di una satira pungente e sagace. “Nel 2014 un evento importante per uno come me cresciuto a 15 metri dal muro del Vaticano e intriso di forte educazione cattolica: arriva Papa Francesco. E a me pareva una persona buona, quasi mi ricordava mio nonno. Ho percepito in lui la febbre dell’innovatore, mi è parso un rivoluzionario vero. E’ nata da questo mio sentire la celeberrima opera che ha fatto il giro del mondo con il titolo di Super Pope.” La notorietà gli scoppia in mano all’improvviso quando, tornando il giorno successivo sul luogo del murale, trova circa 300 giornalisti ad attenderlo, tutti in fila dalla CNN alla BBC per intervistarlo perché Vatican Communication aveva ritwittato l’immagine della sua opera generando in poche ore un traffico di centinaia di migliaia di followers. Eppure l’evento spontaneo di street art più grande di sempre non spaventa Mauro che consapevole delle sue abilità sa di poter dare continuità alle proprie intuizioni artistiche. Per strada Maupal ha portato anche l’immenso Pasolini, dedicando due opere allo spessore e alla genialità di un uomo che Roma l’aveva vissuta profondamente. E continua a guardarla, dal Pigneto, con gli occhi disegnati da Mauro. Pieni di bellezza dentro, pieni di questa nostra Italia, raffigurata nello sguardo di uno dei più lungimiranti tra gli intellettuali di sempre.

A Roma si è appena conclusa la sua exibition presso la Galleria Cà D’Oro (www.ca-doro.com), una mostra intitolata UAU! (Urban Art Utopia) che intendeva portare la street art indoor, ma a Londra Mauro è presente con altri dei suoi lavori presso la Galleria Le Dame (www.ledame.co.uk). Da ultimo si è cimentato con la pratica della performance grazie alla collaborazione con la Confederazione Italiana Agricoltori che lo ha voluto in occasione dell’evento Vinitaly tenutosi a Verona lo scorso marzo e che lo porterà a breve a Milano in occasione di Expo.

Io mi figuro sempre la società come una lancia e l’artista come la punta avvelenata di questa lancia che con la sua sensibilità la deve dirigere. Provo a fare questo con la mia arte, consapevole che la punta di quella lancia è avvelenata perché la vita d’artista in fondo è logorante, è una sofferenza. Ma non potrei fare diversamente

THE DUMMY MEETS MAURO PALLOTTA #DEFINE CONTEMPORARY ART

He is charmed by matter, experiments, innovation and versatility. He is a man of acute intelligence who has an inquisitive mind about reality. Mauro Pallotta, pays us back through his works which portray and display a deep reflection upon the present time. His way to express art connotes his explicit style and peculiar strokes, so much so that the Wall Street Journal talked about it as a sort of passage from painting to sculpture. In effect his hand, as he defines it, is a sculptural one. Although drawing is his primary language, if he has something malleable in his hand, he always tries to sculpt it as though he could not help it. Born and raised in Rome, Mauro loves to bits the city he belongs to. He is intensely anchored and greatly attached to the city he grew up in due to the invaluable experiences he had there and its soul which he feels deeply. Mauro starts his artistic path after attending a painting course at the Accademia delle Belle Arti (Academy of Fine Arts). From the very beginning, his urge to explore and create find fulfilment in utilising different materials, such as cards, wood and wine bottle corks which are not so common to the language of art.

 “I recycled materials that otherwise would have been chucked away. As for cards, they appealed to me since they hold symbolic significance. I mean the gamble, the bets, cards face down and cards face up, in other words the visible and the invisible. To put it in a nutshell they hold great mystery. A very good mix indeed, from every point of view.”

His artistic experimentation takes structured shape in concomitance with the Great Jubilee in 2000, when the effervescence and Romaness of the Italian capital came out in the streets all at once. As a result, his early works tell urban stories and therefore depict the places and characters who enliven Rome. Nevertheless, the yearning for inventing a new pictorial technique pushed him to cope with steel wool, which arguably, among all materials, seems to be the one that does not actually fit in with artistic practices. Nonetheless, this material is Mauro’s intuition and would open new doors for him.

“Deep down, even during hard times, I was sure because I felt it, that art would be my Path. When I discovered the steel wool and the effect that spray has on it, I realised that the latter was a perfect match for the former. After getting loads of practice and hard work, I managed to perfect this sophisticated technique.”

The steel wool utilised in his depictions reveal Mauro’s eclectic style and personality. He catches and then moulds inscrutable, enigmatic and intense people’s expressions and feelings. Yet, when working this unusual material, he is neither gratified by perfection, nor content with the visages characterised by his impeccable style.  Being aware of having a brilliant command and mastery of technique, he knows he can even go for works which stylistically are unrefined or raw. So, Mauro tries to introduce his art into the streets generating a sort of alter-ego MauPal. It is then when he feels the need to be outside institutional places such as museums and galleries and hence in the street in terms of artistic temperament and thinking. 

“The first experimentation takes place in 2012, in the midst of the economic crisis. The work of art portrays little mice running after a cat, to symbolise the weak rebellion against the strong. One year later, in 2013, I represent a little fish pursuing a shark just to tell him “life is a bite.”

The themes are power, the economic crisis, economy and politics and reflect Mauro’s personality and ideals such as sincerity, loyalty and  unveil his great depth both as a man and as an artist.  This is why Mauro is not a lad who beats around the bush, actually he is the kind of guy who always gets down to the nitty-gritty. He strives to hit the establishment which at times is taken hostage by his  sharp and biting satire.

“In 2014 happens a significant event, especially considering that I grew up about 15 meters away from the Vatican walls and that I was given a strong catholic upbringing.  Pope Francis is elected. I genuinely believe he is a really nice chap, he reminds me of my grandpa in a way. I see an innovator as much as a true revolutionary in him. Thanks to the wonderful warm feeling I feel when he is elected the celebrated mural entitled Super Pope, which has earned me a worldwide reputation, is brought into being.”

This work of art brings Mauro sudden fame and success. In fact, the day after creating the mural he goes back to the place where he painted it and finds all sorts of journalists, about three hundred, including those of broadcasters such as BBC and CNN, who are waiting for him and long to interview him. This is due to Vatican Communication who twitted the picture of the mural which in a few hours got hundreds of thousands of followers. The greatest spontaneous event of street art ever, does not worry  Mauro who is aware of his extraordinary skills and therefore knows he can give continuity to his artistic intuitions. Furthermore, Maupal brings in the street also the distinguished Italian film director, poet writer and intellectual Pier Paolo Pasolini. In this respect, he dedicates two works to this brilliant man and genius who experienced the excitement of Rome and that in the Italian capital began to really live. Pasolini’s eyes which in the work of art are full of beauty as well as full of Italy, our Italy,  thanks to Mauro, can still behold Rome from the Pigneto. Mauro portrays Italy in the gaze of one of the most forward-looking, progressive and enlightened men among intellectuals. His art exhibition entitled UAU! (Urban Art Utopia) at the Cà D’Oro Gallery (www.ca-doro.com) in Rome which aims at bringing street art indoors has just ended. Meanwhile, some other of his works are displayed at the Le Dame Art Gallery (www.ledame.co.uk) in London. Moreover, recently Mauro has started to work in collaboration with the Italian Farmers Confederation, who called him to a major event like Vinitaly (an international wine exposition which was held in Verona last March). Thanks to this new challenge Mauro has taken up performing.  He will be staging for them again at Expo 2015 the food world’s fair which is currently taking place in Milan.

“I always think of society as a spear and of artists as its sensitive poisoned point which has to guide it. I try to do the same with art, I mean to express it keeping in mind that the point of the spear is poisoned because at the end of the day, the artist’s life is wearing and artists always experience suffering. I cannot choose but be an artist.”
